Happy Agile People Build Good Agile Teams

happyxmas2013 is winding down and businesses around the globe are making plans (or have made them) for 2014. Most of those plans will be poorly defined and lacking in clear objectives. Rather than focus your energy on things beyond your control, focus on you. Would you like your software development team and your company to be more agile? It begins with you.

You have to be more agile. You have to focus on learning, being a team player, and delivering tangible value. Start with the following concepts and see where they lead you:

  • Listen more; Talk less (you’ll learn more)
  • Praise more; Criticize less (you’ll be a team player)
  • React more; Agonize less (you’ll deliver more)

I’m leaving you with a few words of wisdom by John Lennon from the song, Happy Xmas (War Is Over). Lennon was a pacifist and a bit of a lunatic (his word), but more importantly, he believed in people and wanted to be accepted by them. We need to believe in each other. You can only be accepted if you are willing to accept.

Happy Xmas

So, this is Christmas
And what have you done?
Another year over
And a new one just begun

And so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Christmas
For weak and for strong
For rich and the poor ones
The road is so long

And so happy Christmas
For black and for white
For yellow and red ones
Let’s stop all the fight

A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s a good one
Without any fear
